Sutherland and Microsoft Launch Community Technology Center
Joint Partnership Brings Technology Access and Training to Chennai, India

Sutherland and Microsoft have partnered in a joint initiative to provide technology access and skills training to the community of Chennai. The CTC was established as a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative to strengthen the technical knowledge base of the local Chennai community whose citizens could become a part of the Sutherland and Microsoft families of employees and consumers. The CTC’s digital inclusion initiatives were developed to foster job creation and overall economic growth by establishing an educational center that promotes digital and technological learning opportunities while using local resources to enhance the learning environment.

The curriculum consists of course material provided by Microsoft and is designed to increase basic computer awareness as well as provide students with advanced computer skills aimed at increasing employability. The CTC provides English and local language training courses and has been able to achieve graduation rates of 75%. Students receive a comprehensive learning experience in the presence of skilled Sutherland trainers in classrooms that are fully equipped with multimedia enabled computers, internet access, printers, digital teaching aids and recreational technology. The CTC has trained and certified over 1200 students so far and currently partners with 36 local community organizations to attract new students. “The CTC has opened my eyes to the world of computers and equipped me with the skills and confidence needed to pursue a rewarding technical career!” says Sasin Prabhu, a recent CTC graduate.

“We are delighted to work with Sutherland to bring technology and career opportunities to benefit the under-served community in Chennai,” said Tim Hopper, Program Manager, Microsoft Corporation. “Through our joint efforts, the Sutherland - Microsoft Community Technology Center will help bridge the digital divide by providing computing skills which are increasingly necessary for global citizens of the twenty-first century as well as create technology awareness by showcasing how technology can transform lives.
